AI agents: from hype to real impact

Imagine a colleague who doesn't just execute, but also contributes ideas, plans, and learns. That is the promise of AI agents: software systems that independently pursue goals and make decisions. Already available in the US, but the rest of the world will follow in the coming months.

In short:

  • AI agents are self-learning digital colleagues that independently execute, plan, and improve tasks.

  • They transform communication: from content creation and campaigns to analysis, crisis monitoring, and personalization.

  • Your role shifts from executor to strategic director of AI processes and resources.

What are AI agents?

Unlike simple bots or voice assistants, AI agents combine reasoning, planning, memory, and self-learning capabilities. They don't just automate tasks; they continuously improve processes.

Bots โ†’ respond to fixed commands.

Assistants โ†’ respond more smartly, but you remain in the driver's seat.

AI agents โ†’ take initiative, learn, and adapt independently.

Agents have the ability to reason (think logically and solve problems), plan (devise strategies to achieve goals), and remember things to learn from them.

No more hand-holding, but riding without training wheels

Agents can therefore make independent decisions and adapt their behavior without you having to constantly hold their hand. And that is precisely the big difference with the AI tools we still use today. Those models can now reason, but they cannot independently surf the web, fill out fields, and click around.

You can literally send an agent on an errand. Specify how many people you want to spend a weekend in Paris with, and the agent will investigate, check availability, and book hotels, restaurants, and sights.

Or ask it to scan a folder of documents, extract specific information, put it in a spreadsheet for you, and supplement it with information from the web.

Still limited availability for now

You'll have to wait a little longer before you can get started with your favorite tool. OpenAI's Operator is already available in the US for anyone on the most expensive $200 per month plan. Gemini's Project Mariner is not yet available, but is expected to launch in the coming months.

Manus is a Chinese agent that can already be tried out. In this video, you can see what you can use it for:

The superpowers of AI agents

  • Multimodality: processing text, images, speech, video, and code.

  • Interaction: collaborating with humans and other agents.

  • Memory: learning from past interactions.

  • Tool usage: independently searching for information, reporting, and communicating.

Your workday with an AI agent

What would your workday look like with such a smart helper? Picture this:

  • Your morning: You don't start with an overflowing inbox, but with a personalized briefing from your AI agent. It contains the most important action items, relevant news, and an update on the online sentiment around your brand or campaigns.

  • Throughout the day: Repetitive tasks such as drafting draft reports, scheduling social media posts, or gathering background information are handled by the agent.

  • Your focus: As a result, you get more time for strategic planning, creative brainstorming, important conversations with stakeholders, and critically assessing and refining the AI's output.

Your role therefore shifts from primarily 'doing' to 'thinking, coordinating, and validating'. You become more of a strategic manager of AI resources.

Looking ahead

AI agents will get better at collaboration, understanding multimodal information, and personal alignment. But staying critical is key: the technology is developing rapidly, but requires human oversight and strategic thinking.

Ready for the next step?

AI doesn't replace you; it amplifies your impact. Collaborate with technology and keep learning. The future does not demand submissive executors, but smart directors.
