GEO and AI search: why your content matters more than ever

GEO for public relations

With features such as AI Overviews in search engines and answers from tools like ChatGPT or Perplexity, users are increasingly receiving ready-made answers directly without needing to visit a website. They no longer want a list of options to choose from, but the solution right away. Google is thereby transforming from a search engine into an answer engine. And search behavior outside Google is growing even faster: ChatGPT is now among the top 5 most visited websites, ahead of Amazon. That might seem like bad news for websites. But in reality, something else is happening: the role of your website and content is changing, but its importance is actually growing.

The shift from SEO to GEO

Traditional SEO had a clear goal: ensure that a user clicks on your link. And for that, you had to rank at the top of the search results, organically or through paid ads. To achieve this, companies optimized their websites with: relevant keywords, backlinks, technical optimization, and strong content. With AI search engines, that goal is shifting. The new goal is to have your information used in the AI answer. This is often referred to as GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). Where SEO revolves around clicks, GEO is about:

  • expertise that AI can use

  • clear and structured content

  • authority and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T)

  • content that aligns with real user queries

Instead of merely being visible in search results, you want your knowledge to become part of the answer that AI provides. AI search results more often lead to “no-click searches.” AI systems read various sources and generate an answer from them. As a result, the need for users to click through to a website often disappears, and they end their session. That has direct consequences: less traffic for pages with general information and more competition to become visible in AI answers. And a new form of authority: being mentioned in the AI response. A mention in an AI answer acts like a new digital #1 position. Even without a click, the brand can already build trust and recognition.

Not every AI displays the same sources

The way AI tools handle sources varies greatly. Some systems clearly display where information originates, while others barely do so.

In broad terms, you can view the difference like this:

  • Some AI search results show sources and links visibly within the text.

  • Other systems sometimes mention a brand or organization, but without a link.

  • In many cases, sources only appear when the user explicitly asks for them.

Brands and organizations are, for example, often highly visible within Google AI mode and Perplexity, but invisible or without links in Gemini and ChatGPT. The result is that visibility does not always mean you will also get traffic. Your information can indeed be used without you being directly credited as a source. In addition, brands are often displayed in a random order. Ask an AI model the same question 100 times, and the answer will be unique almost every time. However, there is consistency: which brands or organizations are mentioned is not random. This is what we understand as brand visibility.

Where AI gets its information

AI systems draw their knowledge from a large number of public online sources. Notably, some platforms are used extremely frequently. Common sources include:

  • Reddit

  • YouTube

  • Wikipedia

  • major news and knowledge websites

Reddit plays a special role in this. AI models are trained on human conversations and questions, and Reddit contains billions of discussions where people share their experiences. This makes it a valuable source for AI training and answers. YouTube is also important. Videos are among the most frequently used sources for AI search results (especially within Google), while many organizations have not yet structurally integrated video into their marketing strategy.

Why your website is still essential

Despite all the changes, your website continues to play a crucial role in your digital strategy.

  • Your website is your own platform. Your website remains the place where you have control over your story, determine your brand identity, and structure your content the way you want. It is an important place for branding, but also for fact-checking by AI agents and users.

  • Conversion happens on your own site. AI can advise and summarize, but ultimately, key actions still take place on websites (by users themselves or by AI agents shopping around). This is where product information is viewed, contact is made, purchases are completed, and relationships/communities are built.

  • You build authority through your own content. AI systems rely on sources that convey expertise and reliability. This means that strong websites with original research, in-depth articles, case studies, experience, author information, and up-to-date knowledge have a greater chance of being used.

  • You collect valuable first-party data. Due to privacy regulations and the deprecation of third-party cookies, first-party data is becoming increasingly important. On your own website, you can—with consent—gain insights into: visitor behavior, target audience interests, and content performance. Those insights are essential for marketing, communication, and product development.

How to stay visible in the AI era

Success in AI search requires a different mindset. AI visibility and website traffic are not opposites. They reinforce each other.

  • AI provides reach and authority

  • your website provides depth, trust, and conversion

Create content that AI can understand. AI systems process content better when it is logically structured, contains clear headings and paragraphs, utilizes structured data, and directly answers user questions.

Because AI also draws on external sources, visibility on other platforms is more important than ever: social media, video platforms, communities and review sites, publications, and PR. A strong strategy combines all these channels.
